old

Long in existence

The adjective old is itself quite old, first appearing before 900 C.E.

Old is generally the opposite of new and characterizes things that began or existed a long time ago.

When something new comes along, the thing that it replaces or supplants immediately becomes old.

Old can have either positive or negative connotations, depending on the words it appears with: contrast old friend with old ideas.
