sousaphone

Wraparound brass instrument

A sousaphone is a large brass instrument in the tuba family, designed to wrap around the player's body with a forward-facing bell.

Created for marching bands, it rests on the shoulder and projects sound over the band rather than upward.

Named after bandmaster John Philip Sousa, who commissioned its design.

The sousaphones anchored the low end of the homecoming parade.
