nonslaveholding
Owning no captives
Nonslaveholding describes people or regions that did not own enslaved people, particularly in antebellum America: nonslaveholding whites in the South, nonslaveholding states.
The term appears almost exclusively in historical contexts discussing the divide between slaveholders and those who owned no slaves, regardless of their views on slavery itself.
