astrocytes
Brain's supportive cells
Astrocytes are star-shaped cells in the brain and spinal cord that support neurons.
They regulate blood flow, maintain the blood-brain barrier, supply nutrients to nervous tissue, and help repair damage after injury.
The name reflects their radiating projections: Astrocytes outnumber neurons in the human brain.
