nail bed

Pinkish fingertip tissue

The nail bed is the layer of skin beneath a fingernail or toenail.

It's rich in blood vessels, giving healthy nails their pinkish color.

Injuries to the nail bed—from slamming a finger in a door, for instance—can cause blood to pool beneath the nail and are notoriously painful.
