mortal sin

Soul-severing offense

Mortal sin is a grave violation of divine law in Catholic theology—one serious enough to sever the soul's relationship with God and result in damnation if unconfessed.

It requires three conditions: grave matter, full knowledge, and deliberate consent.

Distinguished from venial sins, which are less serious offenses that weaken but don't destroy grace.

Murder is considered a mortal sin.
