cardinal sins
Seven deadly faults
Cardinal sins, usually called the seven deadly sins, are fundamental moral failings in Christian theology: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth.
Cardinal here means principal or chief—these are the root sins from which others grow.
In casual use, cardinal sin describes any serious transgression: Showing up late is a cardinal sin in this office.
