mew

Soft feline sound

A mew is the soft, high-pitched cry of a cat or kitten, or a gull's call.

As a verb, to mew is to make this sound: The kitten mewed plaintively at the door.

Separately, a mew is a cage for hawks, especially during molting, or a row of stables converted to houses—hence the British mews, a small residential street.
