mescal
Mexican cactus liquor
Mescal is a Mexican liquor distilled from the fermented juice of agave plants.
Tequila is technically a type of mescal, made from a specific agave variety in a particular region.
Some mescal bottles contain a worm—actually a moth larva that feeds on agave.
Mescal also refers to peyote or its hallucinogenic compound, mescaline, derived from the mescal button of the peyote cactus.
