Fort Apache
Arizona military installation
Fort Apache is a U.S.
Army outpost established in 1870 in Arizona Territory during conflicts with Apache peoples.
The name has become shorthand for any besieged position surrounded by hostile forces, particularly in urban contexts: a police station in a dangerous neighborhood might be called Fort Apache.
The 1948 John Ford western and 1981 film *Fort Apache, The Bronx* cemented this figurative use.
