world-ending

Total planetary annihilation

World-ending describes something catastrophic enough to destroy civilization or existence itself: a world-ending asteroid, world-ending nuclear war.

Often used hyperbolically for situations that feel devastating but aren't literally apocalyptic: Missing the deadline isn't world-ending.

The exaggeration works because it measures personal stakes against cosmic ones.
