manes

Lions' flowing locks

Manes (pronounced MAH-nays) in Roman religion are the spirits of the dead, particularly deceased ancestors.

Tombstones often bore the inscription *Dis Manibus*—"to the divine manes." The word is plural; there is no singular mane in this sense.

The Romans made offerings to the manes of their forebears.
