major-general

Above brigadier general

A major-general is a military officer rank above brigadier general and below lieutenant general, typically the second-lowest general officer grade.

In the U.S.

Army and Air Force, a major-general commands divisions or serves in senior staff positions and wears two stars.

Despite having "major" in the title, the rank is junior to lieutenant general—a quirk inherited from the older title sergeant major general, which was shortened.

The major-general addressed the assembled troops before deployment.
