shoulder boards
Military uniform adornment
Shoulder boards are stiff, flat insignia worn on the shoulders of military uniforms, displaying rank through stripes, stars, or other symbols.
They attach to epaulettes or slide under shoulder straps.
Naval officers and some police forces use them for dress uniforms: The captain's shoulder boards displayed four gold stripes.
Also called shoulder marks.
