lunar year

Twelve lunar months

A lunar year is a period of twelve lunar months—the time it takes the moon to complete twelve full cycles of phases, roughly 354 days.

This is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, which is why lunar calendars (like the Islamic calendar) drift relative to the seasons.

Some calendars add an extra month periodically to reconcile the difference.
