couplets

Two-line verse units

Couplets are pairs of successive lines in verse, typically rhyming and of the same length.

The form appears across poetic traditions, from Shakespeare's sonnets (which end in couplets) to hip-hop lyrics.

A heroic couplet uses iambic pentameter: Know then thyself, presume not God to scan; / The proper study of mankind is man.

The tight pairing makes couplets memorable and quotable.
