zodiac animals
Chinese calendar beasts
The zodiac animals are the twelve creatures of the Chinese zodiac, each governing a year in a repeating twelve-year cycle: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
People born in a given year are said to share traits with that year's animal: I'm a dragon—we're supposed to be ambitious.
