calcimine

Old-fashioned wall coating

Calcimine is a white or tinted wash made from water, glue, and whiting (powite calcium carbonate), used to coat walls and ceilings.

It produces a flat, chalky finish but isn't durable—it rubs off easily and can't be painted over without special preparation.

The verb means to apply this coating: We calcimined the basement ceiling.

Also spelled kalsomine.
