keelless

Lacking bottom spine

Keelless describes a boat or ship lacking a keel—the structural ridge running along the bottom of a hull that provides stability and prevents sideways drift.

Keelless vessels like flat-bottomed boats work well in shallow water but handle poorly in rough seas.

The term also applies in biology to birds lacking a keeled breastbone: Ostriches and emus are keelless.
