Sunfish

Sunfish names two unrelated types of fish.

North American sunfish are freshwater pan fish—small, often colorful, and popular with young anglers: bluegill, pumpkinseed, and black bass are all sunfish.

The ocean sunfish is an entirely different creature: a massive, disk-shaped fish that can weigh over a ton, with truncated fins that make it appear to be missing its back half.

It basks at the surface, hence the name.

We caught a dozen sunfish off the dock.
