ladies-in-waiting

Queen's female companions

Ladies-in-waiting is the plural of lady-in-waiting—a woman who attends a queen, princess, or other female royal.

The role combines companionship with ceremonial duties, distinct from ordinary servants.

The term survives mainly in British royal contexts and historical fiction: The queen's ladies-in-waiting accompanied her to the state dinner.
