farthingale

Tudor hip frame

A farthingale is a hooped petticoat or framework worn under skirts to extend them outward from the waist, fashionable in European courts during the 16th and early 17th centuries.

The Spanish style was cone-shaped; the French style created a wide, drum-like silhouette at the hips.

The word appears mainly in historical contexts: Her farthingale made it difficult to pass through doorways.
