duenna
Older female guardian
A duenna is an older woman serving as chaperon and companion to younger women, especially in Spanish or Portuguese households.
The role combined supervision with social propriety—ensuring unmarried women were never alone with men.
The word now appears mostly in historical fiction or as a slightly ironic term for any strict female guardian: My aunt played duenna at the dance.
