keyframing

Setting motion markers

Keyframing is an animation technique where you set specific points (keyframes) marking positions or states at particular moments, and software generates the transitions between them.

A character's arm at frame 1 and frame 30 creates the movement in between automatically.

The term comes from traditional animation, where senior artists drew key poses and assistants filled in the rest.

Now standard in video editing, motion graphics, and 3D animation: I spent hours keyframing the camera movement.
