inbetweening

Bridging keyframe gaps

Inbetweening is the process of creating intermediate frames between two key frames in animation to produce smooth, fluid motion.

Traditional animators drew these "in-between" frames by hand, while modern animation software can generate them automatically through a process called tweening.

The software handles the inbetweening, so you only need to set the start and end positions.

The technique applies to both 2D and 3D animation.
