keto-enol
Carbonyl-hydroxyl interconversion equilibrium
Keto-enol describes a type of tautomerism—a chemical equilibrium between two forms of the same molecule.
The keto form has a carbonyl group (C=O) adjacent to a carbon with hydrogens; the enol form has a hydroxyl group (–OH) attached to a carbon-carbon double bond.
Most compounds favor the keto form, but certain structures stabilize the enol: The keto-enol equilibrium shifts depending on the solvent.
