cays

Low sandy islands

Cays are small, low-lying islands formed from coral or sand, found especially in the Caribbean and along tropical coastlines.

The word is pronounced like "keys," and in fact the Florida Keys take their name from this term.

Cays typically sit atop coral reefs and rarely rise more than a few feet above sea level, making them vulnerable to storms and rising waters.
