irons
Clubs or chains
Irons is the plural of iron—metal restraints for the wrists or ankles: The prisoner was clapped in irons.
A golfer's irons are clubs with metal heads, distinguished from woods.
To have many irons in the fire is to pursue multiple projects simultaneously.
If something is in the irons, it's stalled or stuck—from sailing, when a ship faces into the wind and can't move.
