interlining

Fabric between layers

Interlining is fabric sewn between the outer layer and lining of a garment to add warmth, structure, or body.

A winter coat might have interlining for insulation; a suit jacket uses it to help the fabric hold its shape.

The verb interline means to add such a layer: The tailor interlined the collar for extra stiffness.
