interfacing

Systems talking together

Interfacing is a stiff fabric sewn between layers of a garment to add structure and support—commonly in collars, cuffs, and waistbands.

It can be fusible (ironed on) or sew-in.

The term also describes the process of connecting systems or components so they can communicate: The software handles interfacing between the database and the user application.
