onlay

Partial dental cap

An onlay is something laid or applied on top of a surface.

In dentistry, an onlay is a restoration that covers part of a tooth's chewing surface—more extensive than an inlay but less than a full crown: The dentist recommended an onlay rather than replacing the whole tooth.

In decorative arts, onlays are ornamental pieces attached to furniture or other surfaces.
