dentin

Under the enamel

Dentin is the hard, dense tissue forming the bulk of a tooth beneath the enamel.

Softer than enamel but harder than bone, it surrounds and protects the pulp cavity containing nerves and blood vessels.

Also spelled dentine, especially in British English.
