infield fly

Automatic out rule

An infield fly is a fair fly ball that can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort when runners occupy first and second base (or bases loaded) with fewer than two outs.

Under the infield fly rule, the batter is automatically out whether the ball is caught or not—preventing fielders from deliberately dropping the ball to turn an easy double play.
