infield hit

Beat the throw

An infield hit is a base hit in baseball where the ball doesn't leave the infield.

The batter reaches base safely not because of power but because of speed, a well-placed bunt, or a slow grounder that gives fielders no time for a throw: He beat out an infield hit to shortstop.
