imperial city
Seat of empire
An imperial city is the capital or primary seat of an empire, where the emperor resides and central power is exercised: Rome was the imperial city of the ancient world.
The term also applies to cities that held special autonomous status within the Holy Roman Empire, answering directly to the emperor rather than local princes.
