ice-cap

Permanent frozen dome

An ice-cap is a permanent covering of ice over a large area, smaller than an ice sheet but still substantial—typically covering a highland or polar region.

The polar ice-caps refer to the frozen masses at Earth's north and south poles: Climate change is causing the polar ice-caps to melt at an accelerating rate.
