homologue

Matching biological structure

A homologue is something that corresponds to or matches something else in structure, position, or origin.

In biology, homologues are chromosomes that pair during cell division, or body parts in different species that share evolutionary ancestry—a human arm and a whale's flipper are homologues.

In chemistry, homologues are compounds in a series differing by a constant unit: Methane and ethane are homologues in the alkane series.
