blackout drills

Darkness safety practice

Blackout drills are practice exercises for responding to power outages or emergency conditions requiring darkness.

During World War II, civilians rehearsed extinguishing lights and covering windows to prevent enemy aircraft from using city lights for navigation: The air raid warden checked every house during blackout drills.

Modern usage extends to any rehearsal for power failure scenarios.
