starting gates
Where races begin
Starting gates are mechanisms that hold competitors in place at the beginning of a race, then release them simultaneously.
In horse racing, starting gates are metal stalls that spring open; in skiing, they're barriers that drop away.
Figuratively, out of the starting gate or from the starting gate means from the very beginning: The project ran into problems right out of the starting gate.
