naumachia

Staged sea battle

A naumachia was a staged naval battle in ancient Rome, performed as public spectacle in flooded arenas or artificial lakes.

Prisoners of war or condemned criminals manned the ships, often dying in combat for the crowd's entertainment.

The term also refers to the venue built to hold such events: The emperor constructed a naumachia on the outskirts of the city.
