bolt-hole

Secret safe place

A bolt-hole is a place of escape or refuge—somewhere you can retreat to when things get difficult.

The term comes from a hole through which a rabbit or fox bolts when pursued.

In British usage especially, it often means a secondary residence or hideaway: They kept a cottage in Wales as a bolt-hole from London.
