three sisters
Indigenous agricultural triad
Three sisters refers to a traditional Native American agricultural technique of planting corn, beans, and squash together.
The three crops benefit each other: corn provides a structure for beans to climb, beans fix nitrogen in the soil, and squash leaves shade the ground to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
The method originated with Indigenous peoples of North America, particularly the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and remains practiced today.
We planted a three sisters garden this spring.
