habanera

Slow Cuban rhythm

A habanera is a slow Cuban dance in duple time, or the music accompanying it.

The rhythm—syncopated, with a distinctive dotted pattern—became popular in 19th-century European classical music, most famously in the aria from Bizet's *Carmen*.

The orchestra played a languid habanera.
