tarantella
Neapolitan folk dance
A tarantella is a lively Italian folk dance in rapid 6/8 time, characterized by whirling movements and increasing tempo.
The dance is traditionally performed by couples and associated with southern Italy, especially Naples.
Legend held that the frenzied dancing could cure the bite of a tarantula spider—both words derive from the city of Taranto.
The term also refers to music composed for or in the style of this dance: Chopin's Tarantella in A-flat major.
