roadside ditch

Pavement edge trench

A roadside ditch is a shallow channel running alongside a road, designed to collect and drain rainwater away from the pavement.

These ditches prevent flooding and road damage but can be hazardous to drivers who veer off the road: The car slid on ice and ended up in a roadside ditch.
