hoodoo

Southern folk sorcery

Hoodoo is a set of African American spiritual and folk practices blending African traditions with elements of Christianity and Native American herbalism, involving rootwork, conjure, and the use of charms or spells for protection, healing, or influencing events.

Distinct from Voodoo, hoodoo lacks formal religious structure and focuses on practical magic.

The word also names a tall, thin rock formation created by erosion, common in the American Southwest.

As a verb, to hoodoo someone is to bewitch or bring bad luck upon them.
