Parings are the thin strips or pieces cut or peeled away from something, most often from fruits and vegetables during preparation: potato parings, apple parings.
The word extends to any material trimmed or shaved off: nail parings, cheese parings.
Parings are typically waste material, the bits removed to get at what's useful underneath.
