grainline
Thread alignment indicator
Grainline is a sewing and pattern-making term for the direction of threads in woven fabric, running parallel to the selvage edge.
Patterns include grainline markings—usually arrows—that must align with the fabric's lengthwise threads for proper drape and fit: Make sure to match the grainline before cutting.
Cutting off-grain distorts the finished garment.
