glosses
Explanatory textual notes
Glosses are explanatory notes or translations added to clarify difficult words in a text, typically written in margins or between lines.
The term extends to any brief explanation or interpretation.
A gloss can also be a superficial treatment that obscures rather than clarifies: The report glosses over the real problems.
To gloss is to provide such annotations, or to make something appear better than it is.
