construal

How you read it

Construal is the way something is interpreted or understood—the particular meaning assigned to words, actions, or situations.

The term appears most often in legal, psychological, and linguistic contexts, where how something is construed matters as much as what was said or done: Her construal of the contract differed significantly from his.

A construal is an act of construing, or the result of that act.
